Will Android Auto work with your car on GrapheneOS?

GrapheneOS supports Android Auto, but your car, connection, apps and chosen permissions still need checking. Use this checklist before buying a phone you depend on in the car.

Official support is a starting point for your buying decision

GrapheneOS officially supports Android Auto through an extension of its sandboxed Google Play compatibility layer. That does not establish compatibility with every vehicle, receiver or app combination.

This is an editorial purchase checklist, not an in-house tested-car list. We have not confirmed the Android Auto configuration supplied with a particular GhostSims phone. If your daily journey depends on it, ask about your exact requirements before paying.

Decide whether the Google dependencies and access fit your needs

Install official Android Auto through the GrapheneOS App Store, rather than the Play Store or another APK source. It depends on sandboxed Google Play. Apps appearing in the car must support Android Auto and be installed from the Play Store. Installing those apps through the Play Store requires signing into a Google account.

Android Auto needs privileged access to work. GrapheneOS provides a reduced-privilege integration, with access disabled initially and explicit permission choices. Read the confirmation for each required toggle before accepting it. Do not assume this integration has exactly the access of an ordinary sandboxed app.

If avoiding Google Play is a firm requirement, the documented Android Auto setup does not fit that choice. Settle this before comparing phone models. Also check the account or subscription requirements of your chosen navigation and media apps.

Check the exact car and connection mode

Google’s requirements include Android 11 or later, an active data plan and a compatible car or stereo. Wireless use also requires 5 GHz Wi-Fi support and a compatible wireless receiver. Check Google’s supported-country list and your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.

On a narrow screen, scroll the tables sideways to read every column.

Record these details before relying on either connection
Your requirementEvidence to collectBuying decision
Wired is sufficientExact car year and trim, or aftermarket head-unit model; supported USB port and suitable cable.Arrange a wired test with that equipment, not just another car of the same brand.
Wireless is essentialExplicit wireless support for the installed receiver, plus a successful test in the intended phone setup.A working USB session does not settle this requirement.
One particular app or task is essentialNamed app, account needs and the completed task on the car display.Seeing the Android Auto home screen is only one result.

Wired mode generally needs less access, but GrapheneOS notes that some cars need its wireless permission set even over USB. Notification forwarding has separate access. If the required access is unacceptable to you, treat that as an unresolved fit question.

Use the profile you actually intend to drive with

The official setup menu is Settings → Apps → Sandboxed Google Play → Android Auto. Private Space has its own documented setup path. Follow the current guidance for your intended arrangement rather than assuming Owner-only support or success in every profile.

Sandboxed Google Play is available within the profile where it is installed. Do not assume a test in one profile proves another works. Record the profile, phone model, GrapheneOS build and app versions alongside each result.

Test tasks while parked, and record more than “it connects”

Arrange a demonstration or test where possible; otherwise keep essential features marked unverified. Follow Google’s setup instructions with the car parked. Initial wireless setup uses Bluetooth pairing; Google recommends Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and location services enabled during setup.

Copy this worksheet; record pass, fail or not tested for each row
Task to tryWhat to record
Start the chosen connectionWired or wireless, receiver, cable if used, profile and any error.
Open your navigation appRoute preview and spoken guidance settings for the app you actually use.
Use your usual audio appPlayback, sound output and the controls you need.
Try an essential voice or communication taskExact action, app and outcome; test independently of navigation.
Reconnect in another parked sessionWhether the same setup starts again and what changed.

A blank result means unknown, not pass. For example, working maps over USB would not answer a buyer who needs wireless media playback. Keep your old working setup available until your essential tasks have a confirmed route.

If connection fails, start with Google’s compatibility and connection checks: a USB port alone is insufficient; cable suitability, car settings and receiver firmware can matter. Note the failing step before changing anything. Avoid unofficial APKs, USB-debugging workarounds, bootloader changes or a phone reset as a general fix.

Phone model I am considering: [model]
Car model, year and trim, or head-unit model: [details]
Required connection: [wired / wireless / either]

What is supplied on this exact phone? Which Android Auto preparation is mine to complete, and has this particular car and app setup actually been tested? What remains unverified before I order?

Send these details to GhostSims support, without passwords, account codes or private journey history. Ask the vehicle or app provider about its own requirements when needed.

Choose around your confirmed daily tasks

If the required configuration and test results fit your needs, compare GhostSims GrapheneOS phones. Check the supported devices, banking-app checklist and GrapheneOS phone buying guide for separate purchase decisions.

A GhostSims SIM is not required for Android Auto and does not solve car compatibility. Check communication features separately: GhostSims lines do not receive SMS or register apps, as the current FAQ explains. Retain any suitable line or account access your essential tasks require.
